Since the Sonic's death, Tails and Knuckles are stayed the one who could protect the world from Eggman (because only they know how to deal with him), and they decided to somehow stick together.
At the beginning Knuckles are very worried about Tails, cause he knew how hard fox experience the death of Sonic. However, when Prower slightly recovered and became almost obsessed with the idea back to life the hedgehog, Knuckles began to worry even more. In his understanding, this idea was madness, and young fox  terrified Knux with his obsession stronger and stronger every day. Tails hadn't eaten or slept for many days, month after month persistently strived for his goal, which Knuckles openly disapproved.
However, about his defender duties Prower don't forget - he has developed such a system of protection that Eggman couldn't pass without dying.
But over the years Knuckles more and more annoyed at any mention of Sonic by Tails. Knux considered that himself became better than a hedgehog was. Echidna became stronger, more experienced, more agile and smarter, but Prower still didn't accept him as an equal of their dead friend. This angered and puzzled, although, it would seem, it's a personal matter of Tails, who's a worthy and who isn't, but for the echidna fox was the highest authority in the truest sense. All residents of their land have long recognized Knuckles as a hero, defender and support. All, but not fox.
...but Tails just didn't want that Knuckles taken the burden of responsibility for future on himself.
Fox worried about Knux too, but simply prefer don't show emotion, especially after he cried a river on Sonic's funeral. He had to be strong and tough to Knuckles stopped worrying about fox and didn't blame himself. However, Prower still expressed his concern as he could - secretly and implicitly.
Being together, they are usually silent, but it was enough to support each other.
